Get Involved

PYPM has several ways for people to get involved.  If you are interested in facilitating a workshop; volunteering; interning; sponsoring an event, program, or project; or partnering with our organization, please read the information below.

Facilitate a Workshop:

PYPM is always looking to add high quality teaching artists to our list of facilitators.   If you are applying to teach with PYPM for the first time, we ask for you to send your resume to cait@pypm215.org as well as filling out the following Lesson Plan Template.  If you have taught with us before, you are encouraged to submit ideas and plans for a four-week series or an individual, one-week lesson plan.  You can find the template for the four week series here: Series Lesson Plan Template.  Our workshops are designed to help youth of all different learning styles to hone their creative writing and performance skills, participate in thought-provoking, meaningful discussion, collaborate with their peers, and build their confidence and overall self-esteem.  All lessons must include a list of materials, 1-3 objectives, a text (poem, video clip, article, story excerpt, series of photos, etc.), open-ended, thought provoking discussion questions, a collaborative activity, and a writing prompt.  The order of these requirements is up to the facilitator.

Several additional details about workshops:

  • All workshops last the duration of an hour and 15 minutes.
  • Workshops are currently offered on Saturdays from 1:00-2:15.
  • Facilitators must be able to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of their workshop.
  • This year, PYPM is able to compensate our facilitators at a rate of $100 per hour.
  • For alumni who have recently aged out of youth programs and are interested in gaining teaching experience, we will be hosting a new facilitators training program in the spring.

If you have any questions on facilitating a workshop or the lesson planning process, please contact cait@pypm215.org.

Volunteer:

As an entirely volunteer-run organization, PYPM values our volunteers.  All of our Youth Night events are run by PYPM youth and alumni who set up our materials, greet our audience members, sell merchandise, and host our open mic and poetry slam.  All of our judges for Youth Night and Slam League are artists, educators, and community members who volunteer their time to come out and listen to what our young people have to say.  Our Slam League is made possible because of the educators who volunteer countless hours to stay after school creating a safe space for youth to write, perform, form meaningful relationships with their peers, talk openly, build confidence, and feel encouraged and supported.  We are fortunate to have dedicated members of the community who offer their time, knowledge, and expertise towards supporting our mission.

Below are several ways we could use your support.  If your area of expertise does not fit in with one of these areas, please feel free to reach out and offer a way in which you think you can best serve our organization.

Ways You Can Volunteer:

  • Catering youth celebrations (holiday party, regional picnic, and end of the year celebration).
  • Event staffing.
  • Judging Slams.
  • Staffing workshops. (Experience in the field of education or social work preferred.  Clearances are required.)
  • Grant Writing (Experience required – serious inquiries only).
  • Editing Poems.
  • Coaching a youth poetry team.
  • Organizing and executing community service opportunities.
